Definition

In Bazi, guan sha (Officer and Killings) names the two polarity expressions of the element that controls the Day Master. Zheng guan (Direct Officer) is the opposite-polarity expression; qi sha (Seven Killings) is the same-polarity expression. Guan sha hun za (Mixed Officer and Seven Killings) describes a chart in which both are materially present and compete for interpretive priority. “Officer” and “Killings” are technical names in the Ten Gods system, not ordinary claims about employment, violence, morality, or fate. The central question is not whether a chart is good or bad. It is whether the two expressions are distinguishable, supported, regulated, and functionally integrated with the rest of the chart.

Classical and historical context

Discussions of Officer and Seven Killings appear across the traditional Zi Ping corpus, including Di Tian Sui, Zi Ping Zhen Quan, Yuan Hai Zi Ping, San Ming Tong Hui, and the seasonal reasoning associated with Qiong Tong Bao Jian. These works do not form a single uniform manual. They survive through different textual and editorial histories, and later commentators often organize the same terms under different rules. San Ming Tong Hui is commonly associated in bibliographic tradition with Wan Minying, but attribution and edition questions should not be presented as settled simply because a modern table supplies an author name. Yuan Hai Zi Ping and Qiong Tong Bao Jian likewise require care about transmission and attribution.

A useful source-level distinction is this: classical passages supply labels, images, and conditional judgments; later commentaries turn those passages into pattern rules; individual schools decide how much weight to give clarity, transformation, support, or luck timing. Modern teaching synthesis can compare these approaches, but it should not retroactively make them one consensus. The textual tradition repeatedly returns to qi, season, structure, and use before making a judgment about an Officer or Killing. That ordering is more reliable than memorizing a slogan about mixed elements.

Prerequisites before reading the configuration

Read this topic only after establishing the chart’s basic architecture. You need the Day Master, Month Command, visible Heavenly Stems, relevant Earthly Branches, hidden stems, Five Phases, and the Ten Gods relation for each important qi (phase influence). You also need the distinction between a present factor and a usable factor. A stem may be visible but weak; a branch may contain a useful root without making its qi dominant; a controlling phase may be seasonally appropriate yet harmful when excessively strong.

  • 1. Confirm the birth data and the chart calculation before interpreting it.
  • 2. Mark every Direct Officer and Seven Killings relation, then separate visible, rooted, hidden, seasonal, and merely residual qi.
  • 3. Assess the Day Master through the Month Command, support, restraint, output, and flow rather than through one Ten God.
  • 4. Identify whether the two controlling expressions are actually interacting or merely coexisting in different parts of the chart.
  • 5. Record which conclusions are classical wording, later commentary, school-specific practice, or modern synthesis.

A disciplined reading method

First, identify the controlling phase and its polarity. Do not start by assigning a life story to “Officer” or “Killings.” For a Yang or Yin Day Master, the opposite-polarity controller is Direct Officer and the same-polarity controller is Seven Killings. This polarity distinction is a classification device. It does not by itself determine strength, usefulness, conduct, career, relationships, or events.

Second, locate the two expressions. A visible Heavenly Stem has a different evidentiary status from a hidden stem in an Earthly Branch. Then examine roots, season, combinations, clashes, and the source of each qi. If the Direct Officer is only a weak hidden trace while Seven Killings is seasonally strong and rooted, the phrase “mixed” does not mean that the two have equal force. Conversely, two visible stems may still differ greatly in support and function.

Third, ask whether the chart has clarity or true mixture. Some traditional readings prefer one principal expression to be clear, with the other removed, transformed, restrained, or made secondary. Other commentators treat coexistence as workable when the chart separates functions or supplies a regulating relationship. A chart can therefore be mixed in inventory but relatively clear in operation. This is why counting stems is not enough.

Fourth, test regulation. Seven Killings is often examined through its relationship with Resource, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Wealth, and the Day Master’s capacity. Direct Officer is often examined through its purity, support, and whether excessive output or combination disrupts its function. These are not universal formulas. The correct test depends on season, structure, and the whole phase flow. A proposed regulator must itself be present, sufficiently supported, and not creating a larger obstruction.

Fifth, compare the natal structure with timing layers only after the natal reading is stable. A luck pillar or annual pillar can expose, support, combine, clash, or temporarily emphasize one expression. It does not rewrite the natal chart. Timing may also reveal that a previously quiet distinction becomes observable without proving a predetermined event. Describe the timing as an interpretive condition and state the uncertainty.

Fictional teaching example

Fictional teaching example: suppose a simplified chart has a Xin (Yin Metal) Day Master, a visible Bing (Yang Fire) stem, and a Ding (Yin Fire) presence supported in a branch. For this Day Master, Bing Fire is classified as zheng guan (Direct Officer) and Ding Fire as qi sha (Seven Killings). The chart therefore contains both labels. The example is intentionally incomplete: it does not provide a full birth time, exact branch relationships, or a complete strength assessment.

A careful reader would first ask which Fire expression is seasonal, rooted, and connected to the rest of the chart. If Bing is visible but unsupported while Ding has a strong root, the chart is not a balanced contest between two equal powers. If Metal is already strained and there is no reliable regulating phase, the controlling qi may be difficult for the structure to carry. If another phase separates or regulates the two expressions without damaging the chart’s useful flow, a school may describe the configuration as workable despite its mixed inventory. None of these observations licenses a prediction about occupation, punishment, marriage, or character.

Commentator and school differences

One interpretive family emphasizes guan sha hun za as a loss of clarity and looks for removal, transformation, or a decisive separation. Another gives more weight to whether the Officer and Killing have distinct channels and whether the Day Master can receive the controlling relationship. Some readers distinguish a visible mixture from a hidden mixture; others treat the Month Command and the arriving luck pillar as decisive for practical emphasis. Rules about whether Resource protects, whether Eating God controls, or whether combination changes a stem also vary by school. Treat these as conditional methods, not as interchangeable laws.

The editorial synthesis used here is conservative: inventory first, then season and structure, then function, then timing. It preserves disagreement rather than selecting a single school rule as historical fact. This approach also connects the topic to the preceding discussion of [Tombs, Storage, Opening, and Closing](/articles/bazi-tombs-storage-opening-closing), because stored qi may alter what appears to be a clear or mixed configuration, and to [Bazi Source and Flow](/articles/bazi-source-and-flow), because a controller’s effect depends on where its qi comes from and where it goes.

Common errors

  • 1. Treating every appearance of both labels as an equally strong “bad mixture.”
  • 2. Translating Officer into status or Seven Killings into violence, then inferring biography from the translation.
  • 3. Ignoring Month Command, roots, hidden stems, and the Day Master’s capacity.
  • 4. Assuming one regulator always solves Seven Killings or always preserves Direct Officer.
  • 5. Reading a luck pillar as proof of a fixed event rather than as a new layer of evidence.
  • 6. Calling a school-specific purity rule a universal classical rule.

Terminology note

This article adopts Officer and Killings as the site’s canonical English rendering for guan sha, a standard pinyin label represented in Chinese-character form in source editions. It uses zheng guan (Direct Officer), qi sha (Seven Killings), and guan sha hun za (Mixed Officer and Seven Killings). English alternatives such as Official Star, Direct Officer Star, Seven Killings Star, or Officer-Killing mixture occur in modern writing, but they can obscure the technical polarity relation. The chosen terms are editorial labels, not ordinary dictionary translations. “Mixed” means a configuration requiring discrimination; it is not a moral diagnosis.

Bazi is a traditional interpretive system, not scientifically validated prediction. Do not infer disease, death, crime, disaster, wealth, marriage outcomes, personality, or fixed destiny from this configuration. Do not use it to mind-read a third party or replace medical, legal, financial, mental-health, or relationship advice. A responsible consultation can use the framework to compare symbolic possibilities, ask better questions, and record what is known versus uncertain.
