Consider a teaching chart with geng (Yang Metal) over Shen (Monkey), jia (Yang Wood) over Yin (Tiger), and bing (Yang Fire) over Zi (Rat). In a common Hidden Heavenly Stem table, Shen contains geng, Yin contains jia, and Zi contains gui (Yin Water). The first two pillars show clear local upper-lower matches: geng has a direct lower foundation and jia has a direct Wood root. The bing-over-Zi pair shows Fire above a Water branch without a direct Fire root, so its vertical relation is more contested.

A local-pair reader may describe the Metal and Wood pillars as vertically coherent but must still ask how Shen and Yin interact across the chart. A season-first reader may give the Month Command priority and say that strong local support does not settle the Day Master’s usable strength. A Flow reader may test whether Metal, Water, and Wood form a route; a Climate Regulation reader may ask whether the season changes what Fire and Water can do. The careful conclusion is limited to the layer: two pairs show direct support under the chosen table, while the Fire pair remains conditional. No career, health, marriage, wealth, or personality verdict follows.

Commentator and school differences

Schools differ on whether the pillar itself is the primary unit. A pillar-centered approach gives special attention to the stem sitting over its own branch. A whole-chart approach treats vertical evidence as one input among Month Command, roots, exposure, and cross-pillar relationships. Some readers require an exact stem match inside the branch; others allow a same-phase branch to provide partial support. Some treat the visible stem as the branch’s expression, while others warn that visibility without season or root is only clearer evidence of a weak relationship.

There are also differences about direction. One school may call a branch supportive because it nourishes the stem; another may emphasize that the stem controls or drains the branch’s internal layer.
