From birth time to the Four Pillars

Bazi, 八字 (bāzì, “Eight Characters”), is also called the Four Pillars. The year, month, day and hour of birth are each converted into a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, producing the year, month, day and hour pillars. The conversion depends on solar terms, calendar conventions and time zone; it cannot be calculated from a lunar year or zodiac animal alone. Authors may write “Bazi,” “Eight Characters,” “Four Pillars,” or “Four Pillars of Destiny,” and the preferred name does not by itself identify a single school.

The Day Master is the reading center

The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is usually called the Day Master, rìzhǔ (日主), or Day Core, rìyuán (日元). The generating, controlling and polarity relationships between the other stems and branches and the Day Master are organized as the Ten Gods or Ten Relations, shíshén (十神). They are not ten deities; they are categories of relationship.

The Five Phases are not just a count

Beginners often count how many Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water signs appear. Traditional analysis also considers the birth season, whether a stem has roots, Hidden Stems in the branches, combinations, conflicts, harms and punishments, and the structure as a whole. The same number of a given phase can have a different function in a different month or combination.

Major luck periods and annual cycles

The natal configuration describes a basic structure associated with the birth moment. Dà yùn (大运, major luck periods) and liúnián (流年, annual influences) add new time factors to it. They are commonly used to discuss when a theme may become more prominent, not to divide a life into absolute good and bad outcomes.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Looking only at the zodiac animal
  • ignoring birthplace and time zone
  • equating one Ten Relation directly with a profession or relative
  • treating a clash or control relationship as proof of disaster
  • and failing to state the calendar, true-solar-time and school conventions being used.

Then learn the Four Pillars, Hidden Stems and Ten Relations before moving to Month Command, strength, patterns and major and annual cycles. When reading 《滴天髓》 (Dī Tiān Suǐ, often rendered “Dripping Heavenly Marrow”) or 《子平真诠》 (Zǐpíng Zhēnquán, often rendered “The True Meaning of Ziping”), compare reliable annotated editions and modern calendar knowledge; English titles vary by edition.
