Definition: tiao hou asks what the season permits
Bazi (Eight Characters; also BaZi or Four Pillars) reads a chart through the Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Five Phases, qi (seasonal and relational force), and their relationships. This article adopts tiao hou (Climate Regulation) for the method of asking whether a chart’s seasonal environment is too cold, hot, dry, or moist for the relationships under study to function as expected. Climate Regulation is not weather forecasting, a medical diagnosis, or a shopping list of elements to add to a life.
The method begins with the yue ling (Month Command), but it does not end there. It considers the ri zhu (Day Master), the other pillars, branch contents, visible stems, roots, generation and control, and the routes by which a phase can warm, cool, moisten, or dry another. A phase may be present yet unable to perform its regulating role. A phase that helps climate in one layer may create excess in another.
Classical and historical context
The historical claim used here is deliberately narrow. The calendar, seasonal qi, yin-yang, and wu xing (Five Phases) vocabulary belongs to a much older correlative tradition than any one Bazi manual. Modern reference histories describe Four Pillars as a layered system whose formal development is associated with Tang and Song-era practice and whose manuals continued to be compiled and revised later. That background does not prove that every rule in a modern charting guide existed in the same form in an early text.
Qiong Tong Bao Jian (a seasonal Bazi manual; English title renderings vary) is the clearest named source for the Climate Regulation teaching line used here. Its received organization repeatedly places a Day Master stem beside the twelve seasonal months and discusses cold, heat, dryness, moisture, and suitable relationships. Modern editions commonly connect this material with Lan Jiang Wang traditions, Yu Chuntai as compiler, and Xu Lewu as commentator, but the editorial layers and edition history should be checked rather than reduced to one uncontested authorial statement.
Di Tian Sui (The Marrow of Heaven; title renderings vary) supplies a concise language of structure, flow, strength, and appropriate use, while Zi Ping Zhen Quan (The True Principles of Zi Ping; title renderings vary) is commonly read through Month Command, Ten Gods, Pattern, and success or failure conditions. Yuan Hai Zi Ping (The Deep Sea of Zi Ping), San Ming Tong Hui (Comprehensive Guide to the Three Fates), and Shen Feng Tong Kao (a later Bazi compendium) preserve broader, overlapping materials. Their transmitted texts and later commentaries do not amount to one uniform Climate Regulation formula.
Prerequisites and a repeatable reading sequence
Begin with bazi-seasonal-command, which establishes Month Command as seasonal evidence rather than a complete verdict. Review bazi-structure-and-function, bazi-roots-and-rooted-qi, hidden-stems-guide, and glossary-yueling before assigning a regulating phase. Then keep one charting convention and work through these steps:
- 1. Verify the birth date, clock time, place, historical time zone, daylight-saving rules, and solar-term boundary. Keep an alternative month or hour chart if the data are close to a boundary.
- 2. Write the four pillars and identify the Day Master. Describe the season in plain terms before naming a favorable or unfavorable phase.
- 3. Expand the Month Branch and relevant branches into their commonly used Hidden Heavenly Stems. Record principal, middle, and residual layers only if the chosen school uses them.
- 4. Inventory signs of cold, heat, dryness, or moisture as a traditional model: season, repeated phases, branch storage, visible stems, and whether the chart has a route for regulation.
- 5. Ask what needs regulation for the specific question. A chart may need warmth for one relationship, moisture for another, or containment rather than more of either.
- 6. Test the proposed phase for source, root, access, timing, and excess. A visible phase can be isolated, combined, controlled, or unable to reach the relationship it is meant to regulate.
- 7. Compare Climate Regulation with Support and Restraint, Pattern, or Useful God methods. State which method leads and keep a second reading when the evidence is balanced.
How to read climate without counting elements
Climate Regulation is not a five-phase census. Ten visible Water signs do not automatically mean that every function is cold, and one Fire sign does not automatically warm the whole chart. The reader should describe a condition and then test its consequences within the traditional model. Useful questions include: Is the seasonal background cold or hot? Is moisture available or blocked? Does a proposed regulating phase have a source? Can it reach the Day Master or the Pattern? Does it correct one imbalance while creating another? Does a combination or clash change access without erasing the original evidence?
- Climate fact: the Month Command places the chart in a seasonal setting.
- Structural fact: roots, exposure, branch contents, and visible stems show what can participate.
- Functional question: which relationship needs warming, cooling, moistening, drying, or containment?
- Condition check: the proposed regulator must have enough support, a route to the target, and no stronger obstruction.
- Uncertainty note: different schools rank climate, strength, Pattern, and timing differently, so a conditional conclusion is often the most accurate one.
Fictional teaching example
This is a fictional teaching example, not a real person and not a prediction. Assume a chart with a bing (Yang Fire) Day Master, Zi (Rat) Month Command, visible gui (Yin Water), jia (Yang Wood) in the upper layer, and Si (Snake) as a branch elsewhere. Under a common table, Zi contains gui, while Si contains bing, wu (Yang Earth), and geng (Yang Metal). A first description is a winter Water environment, an explicit Water relationship, a Wood source, and a possible Fire root. It is not yet a verdict about whether the chart is strong or weak.
A Climate Regulation reader asks whether Wood can carry support toward Fire and whether Fire can warm the environment without becoming an unsupported wish. A Support and Restraint reader may separately list the Water pressure and Fire support. A Pattern reader may ask whether the Month Command and visible relationships form a coherent line. If another branch combines with or contests Si, the root must be reassessed. The careful conclusion is therefore conditional: the chart presents a winter climate question and possible warming resources, but their practical function depends on season, route, roots, obstruction, and the chosen method.
Commentator and school differences
Climate-oriented readings often give cold, heat, dryness, and moisture priority before a simple strength judgment. A Support and Restraint approach may first ask whether the Day Master can receive or withstand the chart’s relationships. A Pattern approach may prioritize Month Command, exposure, and the conditions for formation. Some teachers treat Climate Regulation as the primary lens; others use it as a correction after structure and strength are described. These are different questions and priorities, not interchangeable labels.
There are also disagreements about what counts as enough regulation. One school may require a visible regulating stem, another may accept a rooted branch, and another may require seasonal support or a continuous flow. A phase can be climatically helpful but structurally harmful, or structurally supportive but climatically excessive. Modern numerical scoring may make the discussion look precise, but no cross-school measurement validates fixed percentages for cold, heat, dryness, or moisture. Record the rule before reading the result.
Common errors
- Treating Climate Regulation as a literal physical climate surrounding a person or as a diagnosis of the body.
- Assuming that the missing phase is automatically the regulating phase, or that adding more of it is always beneficial.
- Reading a seasonal phrase from Qiong Tong Bao Jian as a universal prescription without checking the full chart and edition.
- Ignoring Month Command, roots, exposure, branch contents, combinations, clashes, and timing after naming cold or heat.
- Declaring that one Fire or Water sign completely changes the chart’s climate.
- Confusing Climate Regulation with Support and Restraint, Bridging, Illness-and-Remedy, Pattern, or Useful God without stating the method.
- Using climate language to infer fixed health, wealth, relationship, career, death, disaster, or personality outcomes.
Terminology translation note
This article adopts Climate Regulation for tiao hou. English variants include seasonal adjustment, climate regulation, seasonal conditioning, and harmonizing the climate; they can refer to different emphases. I retain qi because “energy” may suggest a measurable physical force, whereas here it names a traditional model of seasonal and relational conditions. Han re zao shi (cold, heat, dryness, and moisture) is the adopted four-part climate vocabulary. Useful God is the adopted rendering for yong shen, but it is a technical role, not a deity or a promise of luck.
