Definition: tong guan (Bridging) is a tested route, not a magic element

Bazi (Eight Characters; also BaZi or Four Pillars) reads a chart through qi (seasonal and relational force), tian gan (Heavenly Stems), di zhi (Earthly Branches), wu xing (Five Phases), and their relationships. This article adopts tong guan (Bridging) for the method of asking whether a third phase can connect two phases whose relationship is blocked, excessive, or unable to complete its function. Bridging is not simply adding the missing phase, naming a favorable element, or promising that conflict will disappear. It is a conditional claim about a route inside the traditional chart model.

A bridge must have an object, an obstruction, and two reachable ends. For example, a Metal-to-Wood relationship may be read as too direct or damaging for Wood, while Water is generated by Metal and in turn nourishes Wood within the Five Phases model. A Bridging reading therefore asks whether Water is present, rooted, seasonally usable, and able to reach both sides. If Water is isolated, exhausted, frozen, excessive, or redirected, it is a candidate bridge rather than an effective one. The method describes a relationship; it does not diagnose a person or forecast an event.

Textual and historical context

A short line often transmitted in Di Tian Sui (The Marrow of Heaven; title renderings vary) reads, in ASCII pinyin, “tian dao you han nuan, fa yu wan wu,” or “The Way of Heaven has cold and warmth; it develops the ten thousand things.” The fragment appears in a seasonal and relational discussion, not as a modern diagram of Bridging. Its useful context is methodological: a phase relationship is judged within conditions of time, growth, and function rather than by an isolated element label. This article does not treat that brief line as proof of one universal Bridging formula.

Bibliographic evidence also requires layers. The Chinese Text Project catalogs the received Di Tian Sui Chan Wei under Ren Tieqiao in the Qing dynasty while marking its base text unknown. Its title searches list Zi Ping Zhen Quan (The True Principles of Zi Ping) under Shen Xiaozhan, Qiong Tong Bao Jian (a seasonal Bazi manual) under Yu Chuntai, Yuan Hai Zi Ping (The Deep Sea of Zi Ping) with variant author records, and San Ming Tong Hui (Comprehensive Collection of the Three Fates) under Wan Minying in the Ming dynasty. These catalog records identify transmitted works and attributions; they do not prove that every rule was written at one time or accepted by every school.

Read across these sources as a comparison of qi, season, structure, function, generation, control, and flow. Prerequisites and a repeatable reading sequence

Before using Bridging, review bazi-support-and-restraint, bazi-climate-regulation, bazi-structure-and-function, bazi-roots-and-rooted-qi, bazi-stem-exposure, and bazi-seasonal-command. Use bazi-reading-order to confirm the chart before interpreting its relationships. Then work through the following steps:

  • 1. Verify the birth data, time zone, solar-term boundary, four pillars, and the chosen branch and Hidden Heavenly Stem convention.
  • 2. Name the object being connected: the Day Master, a Pattern, a source-to-function route, a climate condition, or a timing layer. Do not bridge an unnamed “whole life.”
  • 3. Describe the two ends and the obstruction in neutral terms. State whether the problem is excessive control, a blocked generation chain, a missing receiver, or a route that is present but unusable.
  • 4. Identify the candidate intermediary. Explain what it receives from the first phase and what it gives to the second
  • do not call it a bridge merely because it is absent or traditionally preferred.
  • 5. Test source, root, season, visibility, position, distance, and timing. A hidden or visible sign has different evidential status, but neither is automatically functional.
  • 6. Check combinations, clashes, punishment, harm, break, and competing routes. An interaction may redirect or contest a bridge without simply erasing it.
  • 7. Compare Bridging with Support and Restraint, Climate Regulation, Pattern, or Illness-and-Remedy. State which method leads and preserve an alternative when premises differ.
  • 8. Write a conditional conclusion: bridge available, bridge partial, bridge obstructed, or no demonstrated bridge.

How to test a proposed bridge

The most useful worksheet has four columns: source, transition, receiver, and obstruction. Source asks where the candidate phase comes from and whether it has seasonal or rooted support. Transition asks how it changes the relationship under the chosen Five Phases rule. Receiver asks what the phase can actually reach, such as the Day Master or an exposed function. Obstruction records what may drain, control, combine, clash with, or isolate it. This prevents the common shortcut “Metal and Wood conflict, so Water solves it.”

Bridging is also narrower than balance. A chart can be broadly balanced yet contain one blocked route. It can contain all five phases yet lack a usable intermediary. It can have a bridge that works for climate but interferes with a Pattern, or a bridge that connects source and receiver while increasing another excess. The question is not “Which element is good?” It is “Which relationship is being connected, by what mechanism, under which conditions, and with what side effects?”

  • Direct evidence: the candidate phase is visible or rooted and has a plausible source and receiver.
  • Conditional evidence: the candidate appears only in a luck pillar or annual layer, or depends on a disputed seasonal rule.
  • Contested evidence: the candidate is present but clashed, combined, out of season, excessive, or unable to reach an endpoint.
  • False bridge: the candidate is named from a missing-element list without a route, object, or testable function.
  • Layered result: the bridge may connect one relationship while leaving another obstruction untouched.

Fictional teaching example

This is a fictional teaching example, not a real person or a prediction. Assume a chart with a jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Shen (Monkey) Month Command, a visible geng (Yang Metal), a visible ren (Yang Water), and an Yin (Tiger) Day Branch. In a common charting convention, Shen contains Metal, Water, and Earth layers, while Yin contains a direct Wood root. The first description is autumn Metal pressure, a Wood root that may be contested by the Shen–Yin clash, and Water that is explicit in the upper layer.

A Bridging reader may test whether ren can carry the traditional Metal-to-Wood route: Metal is a possible source for Water, and Water may nourish Wood. That does not complete the argument. The reader must ask whether ren has its own support, whether autumn conditions make it usable, whether it reaches the Wood root, and whether the clash or another phase interrupts the route. A Support and Restraint reader may instead prioritize whether jia can receive pressure. A Pattern reader may ask whether the Month Command and exposed stems form a coherent structure. The careful conclusion is limited: Water is a plausible intermediary with visible evidence, but its bridging function is conditional.

Commentator and school differences

Schools differ about what qualifies as a bridge. Some use Bridging mainly for a controlling relationship, especially when one phase can receive the first phase and generate the second. Others use it more broadly for any connecting route in the whole-chart flow. Some require a visible stem; others accept a rooted branch or a time-layer appearance. Some prioritize the Month Command and climate, while others begin with the Day Master’s ability to receive or withstand the relationship.

The same candidate may also receive different names. One teacher may call Water the bridge between Metal and Wood; another may say Water is only a source, while a third gives Fire priority because it restrains Metal directly. A Pattern-first reader may reject the bridge if it mixes the governing line. A Climate Regulation reader may accept it for moisture but not for warming. These are school-specific judgments. Record the rule before applying it, and do not combine a diagnosis from one method with a remedy from another without saying so.

Common errors

  • Treating the absent phase as automatically useful or prescribing colors, objects, locations, or purchases as a guaranteed remedy.
  • Calling every productive sequence a bridge without naming the object and obstruction.
  • Assuming a visible stem has enough force, or that a hidden stem is irrelevant, without checking season and roots.
  • Confusing Bridging with Support and Restraint, Climate Regulation, Illness-and-Remedy, or a completed Transformation.
  • Ignoring a bridge’s side effect: a phase can connect one route while intensifying cold, heat, dryness, moisture, or another conflict.
  • Using a luck pillar to claim that a natal chart was destined to produce a particular event.
  • Turning a structural metaphor into a claim about health, wealth, marriage, crime, disaster, personality, or another person’s private intentions.

Terminology translation note

This article adopts Bridging for tong guan. English variants include mediation, passage, communication, connecting, and way-making; they are not always identical across schools. Bridging is preferred here because it describes a route without implying that the phases are people or that a conflict must be “cured.” I retain qi because it names a traditional model of seasonal and relational conditions, not a scientifically measured force. Structure and Function is the adopted rendering for ti yong, Climate Regulation for tiao hou, Illness-and-Remedy for bing yao, Pattern for ge ju, and Useful God for yong shen. Useful God is a technical role, not a deity or a guarantee of luck.

Bazi is presented here as a traditional interpretive system, not scientifically validated prediction. Bridging can help a learner make a relationship and its assumptions explicit, but it cannot diagnose illness, determine a person’s worth, decide marriage or wealth, predict death or disaster, identify crime, read a third party’s mind, or replace medical, legal, financial, or mental-health advice.
